#OOTD – Ice Ice Skateway

We’ve found the best way to beat the winter blues is to try to get out and make the most out of it.

Ottawa was built for winters. One of our favourite things to do in the winter months is to hit up the Rideau Canal. It transforms into a 7.8km long Skateway during the winter months – it’s the World’s Largest Skating Rink. And, not to mention it is blessed with multiple BeaverTail  vendors along the way.

Although we didn’t have time to skate, we decided to make the most of the chilly weather and take a walk on the Skateway (yes, we are THOSE people…).

Look Winter Cozy-Chic

Living in Canada during the winter can be a trying time. And if you love fashion it feels almost impossible to keep your style game on point with all the layers, clunky boots and the freezing weather.

We find there are key pieces in our winter wardrobes that take us from freezing civilian to Elsa and Ana levels of winter pretty.

1. Find a warm statement jacket. We love the long maxi tweed jackets because you can dress them up or down and they always look fresh.

2. Slimming Skinnies.  Keep your bundled-up top half in check with a skinny jeans, trousers, leggings or tights as a sharp accessories combo. The slim leg will balance out a heavy coat and layers.

3.  Pile on the Knits.  Choosing your favorite knits can be tough – so what torture yourself by choosing just one?  Wear them all!  The trick is to opt for thin sweaters and cardigans and layer away, but avoiding the bulk.

4. Wear your favorite hat.  Whether it’s a beanie or a fedora – keeping your head warm is key to comfort and fashion.  The streamlined silhouette of a brimmed hat and a simple beanie will keep your ears warm and avoids the bulk when paired with a wool scarf and over-sized jacket.

5.  Statement boots.  Why not spice up your outdoor gear with a tasteful heel and a pop of colour.  If the ground is dry and your walking distances is at a minimal try spicing up your outfit with a bold boot.

Polo in the Park Ottawa!

Mark your calendars!  This Saturday, August 27, Polo in the Park Ottawa takes place in the beautiful Wesley Clover Parks in Nepean from 10:00 – 18:00.

Yes, the day will be full of horse polo matches, but that’s not all! Away from the arena, there is children’s entertainment including horse rides, bouncy castles, and face painting.

You can also enjoy many pop-up boutiques, food concessions and refreshment area.

In the tradition of polo matches around the world, fashion and hats are a huge attraction.  We got a little crazy and created a hat and fascinator with vintage violin sheet music.

This year’s Polo in the Park will be hosting a Hat Contest with five different categories!

  • Hat-A-Tude
  • Dapper Dan
  • Too Hot to Trot
  • Colt & Filly
  •  Fresh Flowers

Registration for Hat Contest: 10:00 to 12:00
Hat Promenade: Grand Prix Ring @ 12:30
Winners Announced: Grand Prix Ring @  16:00

Polo in the Park Ottawa is a fundraising event of the Rotary Club of Ottawa South to assist community agencies to provide the important services that so many rely upon. This year’s beneficiaries include the Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health and TROtt.

Werkday Wednesday – Hats, Scarves & Shawls

As the temperatures start to get cooler, we take solace in the fact that there’s one stylish item that can keep us warm: fall scarves and floppy hats.

Yes, our favourite fall accessory is back with a vengeance with plenty of styles to suit every outfit. Grab an over-sized version that can double as a shawl or opt for a comfy, snuggly add-on to your ensemble.
Fall means limitless layering options, the new and very welcome blanket shawl trend, and stomping across crunchy colored leaves in your favorite fall boots topped with an over-sized hat — make us not miss the sweltering summer months. Fall accessories are the best kind of accessories.

Lacey wears a vintage cotton blanket as a blanket shawl; blanket shawls are very suitable for any fall or winter outfit. Just cozy up in a blanket like those and belt it or wrap it, as you wish.  Lacey also wears a small vintage faux fur scarf.  Faux fur is a fun way to dress up any outfit, giving it a touch of vintage glam.

Kay wore the same scarf but in two different ways.  The first is a classic wrap, and the second style is the single knot.

This week we have been helping Antiquus Goods at Milk Shop with some rad window and wall displays.  We recently used reclaimed barn board to veneer a post in the store front.  We also used  some of our antlers to dress up the walls as well!  Stop by and say hello!

Lacey is now gone to Saskatchewan with her family to enjoy some hunting and a family wedding as well as Thanksgiving!  She is going to her favorite thrift store today, so be expecting some posts of her finds soon!

This past week has been a whirl-wind! We had our monthly #blogott meet-up with local bloggers. This month was hosted by Katrina Turnbull of Oui, c’est chic… at Equator Coffee Roasters in Westboro. We were treated with some amazing coffee/tea selections and fresh-baked treats. Shannon Hoops-Ripley was our tour-guide of the coffee-house and also enlightened all of us on Equator’s amazing work with doing directly to the coffee farmers and is part of a fair trade system. It was such a lovely and informative night! Can’t wait until our next one 🙂

This past Friday was Kay’s 27th birthday! She celebrated on Friday night with here parents and boyfriend at Vittoria Trattoria. On Saturday, Kay’s awesome boyfriend, Don, took her on a big shopping spree (she was in heaven and found lots of new beautiful pieces). Later on, she met up with friends and played Archery Tag at Archery Games.

We then went out for dinner and drinks with friends at Murray Street Kitchen. Lacey also bought Kay a super amazing gift: A Crosley X UO Sterling Vinyl Record Player.

Kay had a blast and feels so thankful for all of the love and well wishes!!

Werkday Wednesday – Vintage Vixens Strike Back

As you are probably well aware, we both have an affinity for vintage/thrift clothing. We love the story and history each piece has and can tell.  We love how many vintage pieces are still relevant today and trying to integrate them into our wardrobes and trying something new with something old.

In our last Vintage Vixens post, we gave some pointers on how to wear vintage pieces and pull an “all-over” look and also introduced you to DeeDee Butters owner of HepKat Vintage. For those of you who are new to our blog and don’t know DeeDee or haven’t been to her beautiful shop, she is a vintage expert and just an extraordinary lady who has an amazing eye to pair you with the right vintage piece and make you feel special during your visit. We recently visited DeeDee at her Fall Pop-Up to play dress-up and buy some new finds. We weren’t disappointed and each bought beautiful pieces that you will see us showcasing throughout the Fall/Winter.

While we love going to the mall and shopping for new clothes, sometimes that can get pricey and break your budget. Vintage/thrift shopping can be a cheaper alternative – depending on where you go. There are a lot of 2015 Fall Trends that can be  found by visiting your local vintage/thrift shop. Some of our top favourite trends this Fall that we have found while perusing through our favourite vintage shops are:

  • Faux-Fur and Real Fur Stoles;
  • Flared Pants;
  • Mini Skirts;
  • Loafers;
  • Leather Gloves;
  • High-Collared and Ruffled Blouses (Victorian Trend);
  • Mod Dresses;
  • 70s-esque Dresses and Skirt;
  • Pant Suits from the 80s and early 90s; and
  • Chunky Jewellery (Brooches, Earrings and Necklaces).

Check out some of our new finds from HepKat Vintage:

We know vintage clothing isn’t for everyone, but we highly recommend taking an afternoon to go to a store and playing dress-up. It’s a lot of fun and sometimes you might be surprised by trying on something you didn’t think would suit you and it ends up looking amazing!
