We wanted to expose the Ottawa area on our Eggnog Adventure. During the holiday season there tends to be two kinds of people: those who love nog and those who hate it.
We are lovers of Eggnog.
To the haters, I would strongly suggest if you don’t have some kind of allergy halting you from taste tasting this treat and perhaps have only tried a glass from the generic carton from the grocery store, then I can’t blame you for hating it.
Real Eggnog is a light, sweet frothy yet creamy dreamy goodness where hints of rum and nutmeg and vanilla!
This year our favorite Eggnog is no longer being produced by its original dairy; so we set out on a quest looking for a new favorite. We made a short list and went out and taste tested.
Brum’s Dairy – Located in the heart of the Ottawa Valley in Pembroke, this is hands down our favorite Eggnog this year. The perfect creamy smoothness and the taste is on point with the perfect blend of vanilla, rum and nutmeg.
Reids Dairy – Milk from Reid’s Dairy (located in Belville) is brought in, processed daily and replenished immediately in the store. It’s one of the freshest milk companies in the area.
Harmony Organic – The taste is fresh, but I do find it lacking the Eggnog flavours. However this Eggnog does come to from cows treated with love and respect. It is packaged in an environmentally friendly returnable glass bottle. The taste is fresh, but I do find it lacking the Eggnog flavours.
Farm Boy Organic Eggnog – This Nog tastes much the same as Harmony’s. Its light in texture and tastes more like vanilla pudding then eggnog.
President’s Choice The World’s Best Eggnog – This best commercial eggnog I’ve tried is the President’s Choice perishable/refrigerated version in the black carton. It does have the yellowish colour and the gums, but it has the most natural flavour of all the bigger brands I’ve tried. It’s hardly homemade, but it’s tolerable.
Bolthouse Farms – I disliked this Eggnog, the flavour doesn’t bland well and tastes more like rice pudding then Eggnog, however it does have a yolky texture.
Do not bother with the PC shelf stable stuff in the plastic bottles. These taste more like a meal replacement than Eggnog.
For those of you feeling more adventurous here is a delicious homemade Eggnog recipe.
6 large eggs
3/4 cups of sugar
3/8 tsp. salt
6 cups homogenized or 2% milk
1.5 Tbsp. vanilla
Rum or rum flavouring and nutmeg to taste – we like to use spiced rum
Beat the eggs in an large bowl until light and slightly fluffy. Continue beating while adding sugar and salt gradually. Continue beating until sugar is dissolved. Add milk, vanilla, rum and nutmeg. Stir until well mixed.
Serve upon making or up to 24 hrs after making.
To really impress your guests run your Eggnog through the blender before serving to make your nog frothy and foamy.
Most importantly, don’t take risks with eggs! Always use the freshest eggs available visit a farmers market or support a local farm!
